Canon IXUS

In order to take advantage of the small size of the new APS film cassettes, Canon built the IXUS (or Elph as it was called outside Europe). The camera is indeed very small and in order to first sell the camera to the early adopters, it was made of stainless steel in Titan colour. This gives a high quality look and feel to this very beautiful piece of equipment.
About 10 years later, the camera is as beautiful as ever. Because of the hardness of steel, you usually find them in like-new condition. However there is a major flaw. The Flash seems to be held closed with a litle magnet which looses strength over the years. The result is a half-open or fully open flash, even when the camera is switched off. A real shame as otherwise they are so pretty... This IXUS was the first of a series. The series continues with the cheaper, aluminium IXUS 2 and continous even today with a range of digital Ixus cameras. In the mean time, many cheaper, plastic versions have also been sold, including the cheapest M-1 and the very decorative Ixus Concept Arancia and Concept Summer. A nice little brown bag came with the camera too and aparently it was sold with a aser remote control, however I have never seen one and I did own at least 4 IXUS cameras. |
